murals
ceramic mural
Community murals connect, engage and empower. The ceramic mural featured below was created for the entryway of our administration building and was inspired by the original driveway into the school grounds.
Ceramic tiles are long lasting, and can weather any storm. My ceramics students choose the photograph of the driveway because they wanted to make sure the humble beginnings of our school were remembered and that new beginnings are always welcome, hence the placement in the entryway of one of the first buildings folx enter on campus.
residential life mural
The images featured below document the process we used and the installation of the murals in the hallways of the girl’s and the boy’s dormitories. They were inspired by the work of one of my favorite artists, Kara Walker.
The full sized silhouettes and spectrum of color give the dimly lit spaces a sense of energy and allow the members of this community to be “seen” and recognized as individuals who are sharing the experience of living, learning, and growing up together. Watch the video tour at the end of this section to see both murals in their entirety.
video tours of the murals
These brief tours allow viewers to visually walk down the halls of the dorms and experience the transformative difference art and color can bring to a space.
